Overview

Client: Boehringer Ingelheim
Project Type: Mobile Application Development
Platform: iOS

Princeton Digital partnered with Boehringer Ingelheim to build the Pradaxa AF iPhone App—an essential tool for healthcare professionals treating patients with Atrial Fibrillation (AF). The app combines clinical calculators, dosage guides, and patient education resources to monitor symptoms, support informed prescribing decisions and improve patient outcomes.

Project Objectives

  1. Patient Assessment: Deliver accurate, easy-to-use tools to aid healthcare professionals in assessing stroke and bleeding risks along with renal function calculator for AF patients.
  2. Manage Dosage and Administration: Based on assessments done by the app, provide guidelines regarding Pradaxa dosage and administration tailored for each patient.
  3. Patient Education Integration: Enable healthcare professionals to export and share patient-friendly educational materials directly from the app.

Key Features

Clinical Calculators

    • Stroke Risk Calculator: Uses the CHA₂DS₂-VASc score to assess stroke risk in AF patients.
    • Bleeding Risk Calculator: Calculates bleeding risk with the HAS-BLED score, helping clinicians make safer prescribing decisions.
    • Renal Function Calculator: Employs the Cockcroft-Gault formula to evaluate renal function and guide dosing decisions.

Dosing & Administration

    • Comprehensive Pradaxa dosing guides tailored to patient-specific factors like age and renal function.
    • Switching guides to assist in transitioning patients from other anticoagulants to Pradaxa.

Surgical Management Tools

    • Elective Surgery Calculator: Determines optimal timing for discontinuing Pradaxa before surgery based on renal function and bleeding risk.
    • Emergency Surgery Guidance: Provides critical information for urgent procedures, including reversal strategies.

Reversal Agent Guidance

    • Step-by-step information on administering reversal agents in case of significant bleeding events.

Patient Education Resources

    • Access to a library of multilingual patient materials, including fact sheets on atrial fibrillation, stroke prevention, and Pradaxa use.
    • Ability to export and email patient-specific resources directly from the app.

Compliance and Privacy

    • Secure login requiring AHPRA number verification for healthcare professionals.
    • In-app access to privacy policies, EULA, and terms of use.

Results

The updated Pradaxa AF app has streamlined the clinical decision-making process for healthcare professionals while enhancing patient education. Boehringer Ingelheim has reported increased adoption among clinicians and positive feedback on the app’s ease of use and comprehensive feature set. The integration of exportable resources has also improved patient engagement and understanding of AF management.
